City Council accepts donation of historic Pikeview Quarry site for future community use
Colorado Springs City Council today approved a resolution authorizing the acceptance of approximately 100 acres of land known as the Pikeview Quarry.The donation by Castle Concrete Company is part of a multi-phase effort that assembled more than 400 acres of former quarry and surrounding land in northwest Colorado Springs. The property will be added to the City’s growing portfolio of parkland and open space assets, with future use to be determined through a public engagement process.“This donation is an investment in the future of Colorado Springs,” said Mayor Yemi Mobolade. “Pikeview Quarry helped build our city, but it also left a visible scar on our landscape. What was once a place of extraction will become a place of restoration; an enduring asset for future generations to come. Registration is now open for Spring 2026 Learn to Skate USA classes at Sertich Ice Center, offering lessons for children and adults of all skill levels, from first-time skaters to advanced participants. The program provides a structured, nationally recognized curriculum designed to build confidence, coordination, and foundational skating skills in a safe and supportive environment. Classes are available for a wide range of ages, including introductory programs for young children, youth hockey skating, teen instruction, and adult lessons with skaters advancing at their own pace as they master each level. “The Learn to Skate program is designed to help participants of all ages build skills, confidence, and a lifelong connection to skating,” said Greg Sodbinow, Program Administrator at the Sertich Ice Center & Acacia Park Rink. 8th Street eastbound frontage road to reopen on Tuesday Major traffic shift coming over Fountain Creek bridge on Tuesday eveningThe eastbound frontage road from 8th Street to Highway 24 will reopen beginning Tuesday, March 3. Travelers should expect the road to open at 7 p.m., and motorists traveling on northbound 8th Street will see a major traffic shift over the Fountain Creek bridge.The center lanes of the bridge will close so crews can continue bridge rehabilitation. Northbound traffic will have one open lane across the bridge, while southbound traffic will have two open lanes. The new multi-use sidewalk on the east side of the bridge will also open as part of this traffic shift. This phase of construction is expected to last 2-3 weeks.Additionally, crews will continue to drill to locate utilities under 8th Street just south of the bridge. Drivers may experience occasional short-duration lane closures in both directions. Extra caution is advised while traveling through the work zone.Access to local businesses will remain open and clearly always marked. Hancock Expressway at Circle Drive closing for four weeks
Starting on Monday, Feb. 16, Hancock Expressway at Circle Drive will close for approximately four weeks for bridge work related to the Circle Drive Bridges project.Northbound travelers can use South Circle Drive and westbound Highway 24, while southbound travelers can use eastbound Highway 24 and East Fountain Boulevard to access Academy Boulevard. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change. Street signage and the project hotline (719-428-7090) will reflect the latest schedule information.
