The Hug the Watershed event is an hour-long experience designed to enrich 3rd graders in Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS, and Math (STEAM) while introducing them to future career possibilities. Classrooms will adopt one of the watershed songs as their class song to practice, learn fun choreography, do an art project (costumes, masks, puppets, etc.) that coordinates with their song’s science focus.  Then, they will perform with the nationally acclaimed Banana Slug String Band their selected watershed song while wearing the watershed costumes they have created. These activities are meant to introduce the complex water issues facing our community and foster an appreciation for the value of water.For this 2026 Colorado Springs demonstration project, activity sets, song choreography, and costume designs are being contributed by Cinda Hanbuch-Pinkerton, Environmental Education Director, of The Miami County Park District in Ohio. Learn to Skate Spring 2026 registration opens at Sertich Ice Center, offering classes for all ages and skill levels
Registration is now open for Spring 2026 Learn to Skate USA classes at Sertich Ice Center, offering lessons for children and adults of all skill levels, from first-time skaters to advanced participants.  The program provides a structured, nationally recognized curriculum designed to build confidence, coordination, and foundational skating skills in a safe and supportive environment. Classes are available for a wide range of ages, including introductory programs for young children, youth hockey skating, teen instruction, and adult lessons with skaters advancing at their own pace as they master each level.  “The Learn to Skate program is designed to help participants of all ages build skills, confidence, and a lifelong connection to skating,” said Greg Sodbinow, Program Administrator at the Sertich Ice Center & Acacia Park Rink.  Registration is available online at ColoradoSprings.gov/LearnToSkate or in person at Sertich Ice Center, 1705 E.
